One flat rate, twenty-four city taxes: Michigan's split personality
Michigan's state tax is refreshingly simple - a flat 4.25% after a $5,900 exemption per allowance. The complexity lives one level down: two dozen Michigan cities levy their own income tax on top, and the rules double depending on which side of the city line you sleep on. Detroit is the big one: residents pay 2.4%, nonresidents who only work there pay 1.2%, with a small $600 city exemption per allowance.
That residency split is the most misunderstood line on a Michigan stub. Work in Detroit but live in the suburbs? Half the city rate. Live in Detroit and work remotely elsewhere? Full rate anyway - the tax follows the pillow, not the desk. The calculator above models both cases: pick the city and your residency status.
