Iowa Paycheck Calculator 2026
3.8% flat state tax rate in Iowa — no local income tax, no state payroll deduction.
Iowa is a flat 3.80% state now, but the amount subtracted before that rate swings from $13,000 to $26,000 depending on a question no other state asks on its W-4. This calculator runs the state's official 2026 withholding formula and reproduces all ten of its worked examples.

Iowa's 2026 IA W-4 asks married-joint filers whether their spouse also has earned income. Answer “yes” and your deduction is $13,000; answer “no” and it is $26,000. Head of household sits between the two at $19,500. That single checkbox moves the annual Iowa tax by nearly $500, and it is the most common reason an Iowa paycheck does not match a generic calculator.
One rate, applied to a base of Iowa's own design
The rate is a flat 3.80%, and the state is explicit that the deduction above “is not the same as the federal standard deduction amount”. So a $60,000 single salary is taxed on $47,000, for $1,786 of Iowa tax over the year. Allowances work as a credit rather than a deduction: the dollar amount on your IA W-4 is divided by your number of pay periods and subtracted from the tax itself, $40 per allowance on certificates dated 2023 or earlier.
Nothing local reaches your stub
Iowa school districts do levy a surtax, but it is charged on your income tax liability when you file, never withheld from wages. A 2026 Iowa paycheck carries the federal lines, FICA and one state line.
Iowa asks a question on its W-4 that no other state asks. The rate is a single flat 3.80% now, but the amount subtracted before that rate depends on whether your spouse also has earned income — $13,000, $19,500 or $26,000 a year. Answer it one way rather than the other and the withholding changes materially. This page uses the filing status you pick above; if your household answer differs, check your IA W-4.
A flat 3.80%, per the state withholding formula effective January 1, 2026. The old graduated brackets are gone.
Why does my Iowa deduction differ from my spouse's?
Because Iowa's W-4 asks whether the spouse has earned income. A married-joint filer whose spouse earns nothing gets $26,000; if both earn, each uses $13,000.
Is the Iowa deduction the same as the federal standard deduction?
No, and the Department says so in the formula itself. Iowa's withholding deduction amounts are $13,000, $19,500 and $26,000, which are not the federal figures.
Do Iowa school district surtaxes come out of my paycheck?
No. They are computed on your income tax liability at filing time, not withheld by your employer.
