Mississippi Paycheck Calculator 2026

4% state rate on taxable wages in Mississippi — no local income tax, no state payroll deduction.

Mississippi's rate on a 2026 paycheck is 4%, not the 4.4% still quoted almost everywhere, and the first $10,000 of taxable income is taxed at nothing. This calculator uses the rate the state's own dated table assigns to tax year 2026.

Before-tax money you set aside

401(k) money skips income tax but still pays Social Security and Medicare. Health premiums through your employer skip both.

Mississippi per Form 89-350, Employee's Withholding Exemption Certificate

Mississippi subtracts BOTH a personal exemption and a standard deduction before the rate. The head-of-family exemption of $9,500 already includes one dependent ($8,000 + $1,500).

The mechanics

4% in 2026, and the schedule is published years ahead

Mississippi is stepping its rate down on a timetable the Department of Revenue prints in one table: 4.4% for tax year 2025, 4% for 2026, 3.75% for 2027, each applying to income above $10,000. The catch is that the same official page also carries a sentence about a 4.4% rate “in 2026” - that is the rate on the 2025 return people file during 2026, not the rate on a 2026 paycheck. Read the wrong line and every figure downstream is wrong.

Three subtractions before any tax at all

Mississippi takes a personal exemption and a standard deduction, then still charges 0% on the first $10,000. A single filer subtracts $6,000 and $2,300, so state tax begins only above $18,300 of wages - genuinely zero below that, not a rounding artefact. A married couple subtracts $12,000 and $4,600. On $60,000 a single filer owes $1,668 for the year.

Head of family already counts one dependent

The head-of-family exemption is $9,500, which the state describes as $8,000 plus $1,500 - the $1,500 being one dependent, already inside the figure. Further dependents, and exemptions for age or blindness, add $1,500 each.

Questions people ask about Mississippi paychecks

Is Mississippi's rate 4% or 4.4% in 2026?

4% on a 2026 paycheck. The 4.4% figure belongs to tax year 2025, which people file during 2026 - the Department's dated table sets 2026 at 4% and 2027 at 3.75%.

How much can I earn before Mississippi taxes me?

A single filer pays nothing on the first $18,300 of wages: a $6,000 exemption, a $2,300 standard deduction, and then a 0% band on the first $10,000 of what remains.

Does Mississippi have a personal exemption as well as a standard deduction?

Yes, both. Single $6,000 and $2,300, head of family $9,500 and $3,400, married $12,000 and $4,600.

Does any Mississippi city tax my wages?

No. No city or county in Mississippi levies a tax on wages, so your stub shows the federal lines, FICA and one state line.
