Two income taxes, one stub: how NYC pay really works
Live in the five boroughs and your paycheck settles two income taxes at once. New York State applies its brackets (3.9% to 10.9%, with the first five rates freshly cut for 2026), then New York City adds its own resident tax of 3.078% to 3.876% - and crucially, the city tax rides on the exact same taxable income as the state's. No separate city deduction exists: your NY taxable income is your NYC taxable income.
The city brackets move with filing status: single filers cross into the top 3.876% rate above $50,000 of taxable income, joint filers above $90,000, heads of household above $60,000. On a $100,000 single salary, the city line alone runs about $3,441 a year - roughly the cost of a monthly MetroCard, twelve times over.
Commute in from Long Island or Jersey instead? Then the city takes nothing: the nonresident earnings tax was repealed decades ago, and this calculator shows exactly that when you flip the residency toggle. The state-level story - Paid Family Leave at 0.432% (capped at $411.91), disability insurance at about $31 a year - is unchanged either way, and covered in depth on the New York State page.
Questions people ask about New York City paychecks
How much is the New York City income tax in 2026?
Between 3.078% and 3.876% of your taxable income, depending on income and filing status - on top of New York State's own tax. Single filers reach the top city rate above $50,000 of taxable income; joint filers above $90,000.
I work in Manhattan but live in New Jersey. Do I pay the NYC tax?
No. The city tax applies to residents of the five boroughs only; the old commuter tax on nonresidents was repealed. Switch the calculator to nonresident and the city line drops to zero.
Is there a separate NYC standard deduction?
No. The city tax is computed on your New York State taxable income, so the state's standard deduction does all the work. There is nothing extra to subtract for the city.
Does Yonkers work like NYC?
Differently: Yonkers residents pay a surcharge equal to 16.75% of their net New York State tax rather than separate brackets, and nonresidents who work there pay 0.5% on earnings. Pick Yonkers in the calculator to see it.
