The year the middle-class rates finally moved
New York cut its first five tax rates for 2026 - the widest bracket, covering most full-time salaries, fell from 5.5% to 5.4%, with a second cut of the same size scheduled for 2027. Small per paycheck, real over a year, and the first movement in those rates in years. The top of the ladder (6.85% up to 10.9% for the very highest incomes) did not move.
Beyond the income tax, two insurance lines ride on every New York stub: Paid Family Leave at 0.432% of pay, capped at $411.91 for the year, and disability insurance capped at about $31 a year. And geography matters more here than almost anywhere: New York City residents pay a second income tax (3.078-3.876% - see the dedicated NYC page), while Yonkers residents pay a surcharge equal to 16.75% of their state tax.
