The mechanics

Your marital status does not change the table

Most states publish a separate rate schedule for single filers and for couples. Rhode Island publishes one, and the Division of Taxation says so in as many words: a uniform schedule used by all filers. The bands are 3.75% up to $82,050 of taxable income, 4.75% to $186,450, and 5.99% above. Filing jointly does not widen them. What your status does change is the standard deduction - $11,200 single, $22,400 joint, $16,800 head of household in 2026 - and that is the whole of the difference.

The disability contribution moved in both directions

Temporary Disability Insurance is one of the few employee-funded state programs in the country, and 2026 changed two of its numbers at once. The rate fell from 1.3% to 1.1%. The taxable wage base rose from $89,200 to $100,000. The maximum you can pay still went down, from $1,159.60 to $1,100.00 - but if you earn under about $89,000 the rate cut is what you feel. Temporary Caregiver Insurance is not a second deduction: it is paid for out of this same contribution.

Where this page stops, and why

Above $261,000 of income Rhode Island begins removing the standard deduction and exemptions - not gradually, but in four steps, where a single dollar over a threshold costs a fifth of the deduction outright. This calculator does not model that step rule, and it says so rather than produce a number it cannot stand behind. One more thing worth knowing at any income: Rhode Island does not accept the federal W-4. Your employer needs Form RI W-4, which has no filing-status box on it at all.

One caveat about how we checked this

Rhode Island serves its own tax documents from behind a bot challenge, so the automatic re-check that watches every other state on this site cannot reach them. The figures here were read by hand from the Division of Taxation's own 2026 documents on 12 August 2026 and cross-checked against three of them - the inflation advisory, the estimated-tax form and the employer withholding booklet - which agree exactly. Every one of them is linked in the sources below, so you can open them and check us rather than take our word for it. We would rather say this than let a re-check date on this page imply a machine confirmed something it never reached.

Questions people ask about Rhode Island paychecks

Does Rhode Island tax married couples at a different rate?

No. Rhode Island uses one rate schedule for every filing status - 3.75%, 4.75% and 5.99% at the same thresholds. Only the standard deduction differs: $11,200 single, $22,400 filing jointly, $16,800 head of household.

What is the Rhode Island TDI rate for 2026?

1.1% of wages up to $100,000, so at most $1,100.00 for the year. The rate came down from 1.3% while the wage base rose from $89,200, which lowered the annual maximum from $1,159.60.

Is TCI a separate deduction from TDI?

No. Temporary Caregiver Insurance is part of the TDI programme and is funded by the same contribution. You should see one deduction, not two.

Why does this calculator stop above $261,000?

Because that is where Rhode Island phases out the standard deduction and exemptions in four stepped tranches, rounding upward so that one dollar of excess already costs 20%. We do not model that rule, and we would rather say so than guess.

Can I use a federal W-4 in Rhode Island?

No. Since 2020 employers must have Form RI W-4 for state withholding. It caps allowances at ten and has no filing-status box, because Rhode Island's withholding does not use one.
