The mechanics

Flat 5% - until the millionaire line

Massachusetts runs a flat 5.00% income tax with one famous exception: income above $1,107,750 (the 2026 threshold, inflation-adjusted yearly) pays an extra 4% surtax - the "millionaires tax" voters added to the constitution. For most paychecks the math is simply 5% of taxable income; for very high earners the calculator above applies the 9% combined rate on the excess automatically.

The line most workers actually notice is smaller: Paid Family and Medical Leave. The employee share runs 0.46% of wages up to the Social Security cap ($184,500) - a deduction several national calculators still omit, which is why our Massachusetts number can differ from theirs by exactly that premium. Ours matches the stub; the receipts are on the methodology page. Employers are allowed to pay part or all of the employee share, so your own stub may show less than the calculator assumes.

Questions people ask about Massachusetts paychecks

When does the Massachusetts millionaire surtax apply?

Only on income above $1,107,750 in 2026 (the threshold adjusts with inflation each year). Below it, everything pays the flat 5%; above it, the excess pays 9% - the calculator handles the split automatically.

What is the PFML line on my Massachusetts stub?

The Paid Family and Medical Leave employee premium: 0.46% of wages up to $184,500. About $276 a year on a $60,000 salary - included in this calculator's result.

Does Boston add a city income tax?

No. No Massachusetts city or town taxes wages - the state line (plus PFML) is everything.

Massachusetts Circular M (Rev. 12/25) — Supplemental wage payments (Circular M Rev. 12/25, section G): add the payment to the employee's annualized regular wages net of FICA/Medicare and exemption factors plus any prior supplemental payments; if that total exceeds $1,107,750 the payment is withheld at the LESSER of 9% of the payment, or 9% of the excess over $1,107,750 plus 5% of the rest. Below the threshold, a flat 5%. Reproduces the guide's worked example ($24,854).
