Why our Oregon number is lower than most calculators' - and closer to your return
Oregon's ladder is steep (4.75% up to 9.9%) but it hides a mechanism most calculators skip: Oregon lets you subtract part of your federal income tax from your state taxable income, up to a capped amount that phases out at higher incomes. Omitting it - as several major competitors do - overstates the Oregon tax by hundreds of dollars on ordinary salaries. We model it in full; the comparison receipts are on the methodology page.
On the paycheck itself, two program lines join the income tax: Paid Leave Oregon at 0.6% of pay (employee share, capped) and the statewide transit tax at 0.1%. Portland-area high earners can also face the metro-level taxes on income above $125,000 - those are a story for a dedicated Portland page, not modeled here.
